Description:
Untitled document

Two defects common in poor quality main crop potatoes are illustrated (fig.1).

The first (A) is mechanical damage almost certainly sustained at the time of harvesting. Even where such cuts do not lead directly to spoilage they lower quality and render the potato unsuitable for mechanical peeling (of particular importance when potatoes are grown for processing).

The second defect, the large cavity (arrowed B), is the consequence of attack by a chewing pest such as a slug of wireworm (larval stage of Agriotes spp, see fig. 2, 3, 4) before harvesting. Such attack commonly leads to secondary microbial rots resulting in a much enlarged lesion or total loss.

Potatoes in store are also subject to attack by rodent although the damage is normally distinguishable from that illustrated.
